Victims of Bondi Beach Shooting: A Tragic Loss to the Community

At least 15 civilians have been confirmed dead following a tragic shooting at Bondi Beach during an event marking the start of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Among the victims are two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and a 10-year-old girl. Here is what we know about those identified so far:

Matilda, 10

Authorities have confirmed that a 10-year-old girl, named Matilda by her family, was among those killed. Irina Goodhew, who organized a fundraiser for Matilda's mother, remembered her as a 'bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her.' The Harmony Russian School of Sydney, where she was a student, expressed their sorrow, stating: 'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic event.'

Her aunt told ABC news that Matilda's sister, who was with her at the time of the shooting, is struggling to cope with the loss. 'They were like twins — they've never been separated,' she said.

Rabbi Eli Schlanger

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, known as the 'Bondi Rabbi,' was one of the key organizers of the event. Aged 41, he was head of the local Chabad mission. His cousin, Rabbi Zalman Lewis, confirmed his death. The Chabad organization noted that Rabbi Schlanger leaves behind his wife and young children, the youngest being just two months old. 'He was the most godly, humane, kind, gracious human being I think I've ever met,' said Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

Dan Elkayam

The French national Dan Elkayam's death was confirmed by France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. 'We mourn with his family and loved ones,' he wrote. Elkayam, who worked for NBCUniversal and moved to Australia last year, was also an enthusiastic footballer, fondly remembered by his teammates at Rockdale Ilinden Football Club as an 'extremely talented and popular figure.'

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman, a Holocaust survivor from Ukraine, tragically lost his life shielding his wife from the gunman's bullets. His wife, Larisa, described the terrifying incident, expressing her sorrow and uncertainty over his whereabouts. Chabad noted on social media that Alexander's brave actions left a lasting impact even in his final moments.
