Visa Completes Successful AI Transactions in New Pilot Program

Visa announced on Thursday that it has successfully completed hundreds of AI-driven transactions as part of a pilot program launched after the company's product event in April.

The payments network, along with competitors across the fintech sector, is striving to create tools that enable consumers to use artificial intelligence agents for executing specific transactions.

'This is going to be the year we see an enormous amount of material adoption, and consumers really starting to get comfortable in a bunch of different agentic environments,' stated Rubail Birwadker, Visa's head of growth products and partnerships, during an interview.

AI is revolutionizing the e-commerce experience for shoppers, influencing how customers browse and purchase products.

Mastercard announced in April that it is testing a feature called Agent Pay, which lets AI agents shop online on behalf of customers. That same month, Amazon started testing a service named 'Buy For Me,' and PayPal has partnered with Perplexity on agentic shopping tools. In December, a survey from Visa revealed that nearly half of U.S. shoppers are using AI in their purchase processes.

Although data is currently limited, Birwadker noted that these tools could be especially beneficial for regular purchases made by consumers or for acquiring items like concert tickets.

Visa also revealed plans to introduce pilot programs in Asia and Europe next year and is collaborating with over 20 partners on developing AI agent tools.
