Bungie's Marathon Revival Set for March Release

It's been nearly three years since Bungie, the creator of Destiny and a subsidiary of Sony, announced the return of the iconic Marathon FPS franchise. Since then, the release date had been elusive following underwhelming feedback from an Alpha test session. Originally slated for a September 23, 2025 launch, the game faced indefinite delays.

Today's exciting update came via a post on the PlayStation Blog, where Bungie confirmed that the new Marathon title is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PCs, and Xbox Series X|S on March 5. This narrows down the March release window hinted at back in December.

The announcement was accompanied by a pre-order trailer showcasing the eagerly awaited release. Differing from Destiny 2's free-to-play model introduced in 2019, Marathon will be available for purchase. The game offers two versions: a Standard Edition for $40 and a Deluxe Edition for $60, which includes additional digital rewards and cosmetic items. This pricing strategy mirrors that of Arc Raiders, a similar game that recently reached 12 million in sales within twelve weeks.

The revamped Marathon brings a new spin on the classic series. Contrary to the original Marathon trilogy from the 1990s Macintosh era—which featured a single-player campaign and deathmatch multiplayer reminiscent of Doom—the new entry presents a 'PvPvE survival extraction shooter' format. Players will explore various zones, scavenging for cosmetics and gear upgrades during missions. These missions can shift into rapid PvP combat scenarios unexpectedly, allowing for play alone or in teams of up to three players, according to the game's official description.
