Ars: I presume you guys have received screeners for Starfleet Academy. How do you feel about it as a show? And how does it feel to discuss it on your own show?
Ben: Iāve watched two episodes so far and remain quite optimistic about Starfleet Academy. It's somewhat bittersweet that it's the only one currently in production among the Star Trek series since Strange New Worlds has wrapped up, even though its fourth season isn't released yet, and none of the others are filming now.
Adam: Iāve also seen two episodesāeach surprisingly lengthy. What's rather unexpected about Starfleet Academy is its hour-long format. Years back, I coined the phrase āStar Trek is a place,ā implying itās more than just a ship, a captain, or a federation; itās a storytelling realm. Currently, Starfleet Academy feels like a manifestation of that conceptāa segment of the Star Trek universe.
So, despite any cheesy promotional material, Iām not disliking it. Iām genuinely enjoying itāitās fresh and engaging. I share Benās sentiment about whether weāre nearing the end of seeing new Star Trek content, potentially facing another drought of ten years without it. I hope not, as I prefer a continuous stream of Star Trek, even if some find it challenging or unpopularāit inspires thought and discussion. Even if itās not your version of Star Trek, itās still exciting to converse about.
Ars: A major wish of yours has been to be blown out of an airlock in a new Star Trek episode. How close are we to seeing this on screen?
Adam: It's been depicted in comic books.
Ars: Have you pitched this idea to anyone capable of realizing it?
Ben: Some individuals within the Star Trek realm are aware of this desire, and yes, itās featured in comics and fan productions. We eagerly seize any chance to be ejected from an airlock. Receiving an official offer from Star Trek would be incredibleāa true career highlight.
We've even expressed that if contacted, weāll cover our own travel to Toronto. If contractual obligations require them to pay us, we'll donate the earnings to charity. Our motivation isnāt fame or profit; itās about experiencing the unique thrill of being blown out of an airlock.
Adam: Itās about finally encountering the sweet, sweet peace of death.
