Hamster Corporation Revives Retro Gaming with Console Archives on Switch 2

In 2018, Nintendo transitioned from its Virtual Console, a beloved platform for downloading classic games on the Wii and Wii U, to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, which offered timed access to select games. Now, Hamster Corporation is stepping up to fill that gap by making retro console games available for individual purchase on the Switch 2.

During today's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, Hamster announced the launch of its Console Archives series. Starting today, these emulated classics can be downloaded on the Switch 2, with availability extending to the PlayStation 5 next week. Unfortunately, fans using Xbox or the original Switch will have to wait. Currently, the catalog includes the original PlayStation's Cool Boarders priced at $12 and the NES's action platformer Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos at $8. Hamster also hinted at future additions of more niche titles like Doraemon and Sonic Wings Special.

Hamster Corporation is not new to this arena; it made a name by offering the Arcade Archive series since 2014, facilitating access to classic arcade games for modern consoles, including some of Nintendo's own celebrated arcade titles. The company marked a milestone with its 500th release in December.

With Console Archives, Hamster is extending its legacy, proclaiming a commitment to “faithfully reproducing masterpieces released on various home game consoles, allowing players to easily enjoy them on the latest hardware.” Although these offerings may be more stripped down compared to the more elaborate interactive experiences from companies like Digital Eclipse, they do offer enticing modern features such as customizable button configurations, adjustable screen settings, and the ability to save and load games at any moment.
